Leader Profile: Chelsea Biklen

An interview with Chelsea Biklen, Cupertino SRTS Community Coordinator.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I have worked for Cupertino Safe Routes to School (SRTS) since June 2015. Previously, I was the SRTS coordinator for two San Mateo School Districts. I participated in the 10 month Climate Corps Bay Area Fellowship through Strategic Energy Innovations, similar to Americorps.

The YMCA’s areas of focus are youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. YBike supports all three of these areas of focus as we help kids and families get active, collectively reduce emissions and traffic, and create opportunities for youth leadership and team work. Tell us a little about yourself.

I have worked for the Napa County Office of Education since 2009, when the Safe Routes To School program began. I used to work as a substitute teacher prior to starting at the County. I worked as a bicycling and walking safety instructor for three years, but now work more as a coordinator than an instructor.

Tell us about your program and its audience.

Our camp is called After Class Enrichment (ACE) Summer Camp and has been running for three years. Our program receives 21st Century Community Learning Centers funding from the U.S. Department of Education for a five week summer camp. Kids can take classes in sports, digital arts, swimming, cooking, crime scene investigation (CSI), and bike safety.
